Fabrication Gate
Certification comes before construction
Hand & Cutting Tool Certification
No student may independently perform cutting or applicable hand-tool operations on the launch-pad prototype until the required certification has been completed.
Safety Focus
Demonstrate safe fabrication habits
Cutting-tool readiness
- Use the correct cutting surface.
- Keep hands out of the cutting path.
- Cut away from the body and other people.
- Use controlled passes instead of excessive force.
- Inspect tools before use and return them correctly.
Hot-glue readiness
- Keep the heated tip away from skin and materials not being joined.
- Use only the amount of glue needed for the joint.
- Allow joints to cool before loading them.
- Keep cords and tools organized at the workstation.
- Clean the work area before leaving.
Cutting Layout
Plan the 12 in × 18 in foam-board sheet
Before cutting, sketch or mark a layout showing every foam-board component your design requires.
- Fit all planned foam-board parts on the single 12 in × 18 in sheet.
- Label critical dimensions.
- Check the layout against the final design drawing.
- Leave enough room for safe, accurate cuts.
- Do not cut until the teacher approves the readiness check.
Readiness Check
Ready means design + tools + materials + sequence
- Final design is teacher-approved.
- Hand & Cutting Tool Certification is complete for students performing those operations.
- Foam-board cutting layout is complete.
- Material quantities fit within the team kit.
- Build sequence is clear.
- Rocket-fit checkpoints are identified.
