Why This Matters
Manufacturing decisions must be supported by measurements and calculations. Students will use classroom values and teacher-approved machine limits rather than guess cutting parameters.
Learn Before You Build
Complete these steps in order. Record the requested notes or evidence before moving to the graded activity.
1. Organize variables and units
Create a known/unknown table before using any equation. Keep inch and metric quantities separate unless a conversion is explicitly required.
2. Review cutting-data relationships
Watch the Haas speeds-and-feeds lesson and identify cutting speed, spindle speed, chip load, flute count, and feed rate.
3. Practice with one worked example
Follow the teacher example from stock dimensions through mass, utilization, tolerance limits, spindle speed, and feed rate.
4. Verify using the calculator
Use the Manufacturing Math Calculator to check—not replace—your written calculations. Correct any unit or setup error.
Complete and Defend the Manufacturing Calculations
- 1Record every provided value with its variable name, unit, source, and whether it is measured, calculated, estimated, or teacher approved.
- 2Calculate the initial stock area or volume using the actual stock geometry.
- 3Calculate the finished-part area or volume using the approved approximation or Fusion physical properties.
- 4Calculate material removed, estimated mass, material utilization, and scrap percentage.
- 5Calculate the upper and lower limits for each assigned tolerance.
- 6Using sample inspection data, calculate signed error, absolute error, percent error, and pass/fail status.
- 7Calculate preliminary spindle speed using the teacher-provided cutting speed and tool diameter.
- 8Calculate preliminary feed rate using approved chip load, flute count, and spindle speed.
- 9Compare the calculated spindle and feed values with the DMC2 Mini or assigned FoxAlien limits, tool limits, material guidance, and teacher-approved classroom values.
- 10Estimate machining time or production rate using the provided path length, feed rate, or cycle-time data.
- 11Estimate material cost and unit cost when cost data are provided.
- 12Write a recommendation that states which values are calculations, which values are machine limits, and which final values require teacher approval.
