Engineering Context

Engineers often study an existing product before they redesign it. Reverse engineering begins with careful observation, component identification, and reasoned predictions about how a product works.

Materials

What You Need

  • One approved classroom object
  • Engineering notebook
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils or fine-tip pens
  • Optional magnifier
Procedure

Instructions

  1. Select an object with at least four visible parts, such as a stapler, tape dispenser, scissors, hole punch, or marker.
  2. Create a clean isometric sketch of the complete object.
  3. Number every visible component and create a matching parts list.
  4. For each component, record its function and likely material.
  5. Predict how each part was manufactured: molding, stamping, extrusion, machining, forming, or another process.
  6. Create an exploded sketch showing the likely assembly order.
  7. Identify one design feature that improves safety, comfort, durability, or ease of assembly.
  8. Propose one redesign and explain the problem it solves.

Engineering Requirements

  • Identify at least four components
  • Use labels and leader lines correctly
  • Include a material and process prediction for every component
  • Show a logical exploded assembly order
  • Support predictions with visible evidence
Constraints

Constraints & Safety

  • Do not disassemble sealed, sharp, powered, or school-owned equipment without permission
  • Complete all sketches by hand
  • Do not use an internet image as the primary drawing
