Reverse Engineering an Everyday Product

Analyze how a common product is designed, made, and improved—without taking it apart.

Select a Product

Choose a safe classroom object you can closely observe without opening or disassembling it. Examples include a stapler, reusable bottle, pencil sharpener, tape dispenser, computer mouse, binder clip, or headphones.

2. Component Analysis

Identify at least five visible or inferred components.

3. Functional Diagram

Create a diagram showing how an input from the user becomes an output from the product. Use arrows and labels.

4. Exploded-View-Style Sketch

Draw the components separated in the order they would likely assemble. You are making an informed estimate; do not disassemble the product.

5. Design Decisions

  1. Which feature appears most important to the product's function?
  2. Where might the product fail after repeated use?
  3. What manufacturing choice likely reduced cost?
  4. What tradeoff did the designer probably make?

6. Improvement Proposal

Sketch and explain one realistic improvement. State the benefit and one possible drawback.

Submission Checklist

  • Required calculations, tables, sketches, or diagrams are complete.
  • The final recommendation uses evidence from the lesson.
