Inspection Scenario

A CNC process produces aluminum mounting blocks. The specified width is 25.00 mm ± 0.20 mm. Acceptable parts must measure from 24.80 mm through 25.20 mm.

1. Inspect the Batch

  1. Complete the acceptance and deviation columns.
  2. How many parts are accepted?
  3. What percentage of the batch is rejected?

2. Identify the Pattern

  1. Are the rejected values randomly high and low, or do they show a direction?
  2. At what part number does the process appear to move out of tolerance?
  3. Does the process later move back toward the target?

3. Diagnose Possible Causes

Rank the following possible causes from most to least likely and explain your top choice:

  • Tool wear
  • Incorrect initial program dimension
  • Loose fixture
  • Temperature change
  • Measurement error

4. Corrective Action Plan

Describe what the operator should do immediately, what should be inspected, and how the process should be verified before production resumes.

5. Quality Report

Write a four-sentence report summarizing the specification, findings, likely cause, and recommended action.
