Engineering Safety

Study Guide

Use this guide to prepare for the Engineering Safety Certification final test.

1. General lab expectations

  • Follow teacher directions the first time they are given.
  • Use tools only after instruction, certification, and permission.
  • Stay in assigned work areas unless directed otherwise.
  • Never rush, horseplay, distract others, or use tools while unfocused.
  • Stop work immediately when a safety concern appears.

2. Personal protective equipment

  • Safety glasses are required whenever cutting, drilling, sanding, soldering, or using powered equipment.
  • Tie back long hair and secure hoodie strings, lanyards, and loose clothing.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes in fabrication areas.
  • Use gloves only when appropriate; gloves can be dangerous around rotating machinery.
  • Use ventilation or fume extraction when required.

3. Tool and equipment boundaries

  • Do not operate equipment until certified for that tool and approved for that task.
  • Inspect tools before use and report damage immediately.
  • Keep hands, cords, and materials clear of moving parts.
  • Use clamps, fixtures, or workholding when needed.
  • Let machines stop fully before removing parts, scraps, or guards.

4. Material handling

  • Check that materials are approved for the tool and process.
  • Do not cut unknown plastics, coated materials, or unsafe materials on the laser cutter.
  • Keep flammable materials away from heat, soldering, and laser operations.
  • Handle sharp edges, hot parts, and freshly cut materials carefully.
  • Dispose of scrap in the correct bin or container.

5. Emergency response

  • Know where the eyewash, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, exits, and emergency stop controls are located.
  • Tell the teacher immediately about injuries, broken tools, smoke, sparks, unusual sounds, or unsafe behavior.
  • Do not hide accidents or near misses.
  • In an emergency, stop work, alert the teacher, and follow directions.
  • Use emergency stops only for immediate safety concerns.

6. Housekeeping and shutdown

  • Keep walkways, tables, and machine areas clear.
  • Return tools, clean work surfaces, and remove scraps before leaving.
  • Power down or secure equipment as instructed.
  • Do not leave running machines unattended unless the teacher has specifically approved that process.
  • Leave the lab ready for the next student team.

Safety mindset

Certification is not just about remembering rules. It shows that you can recognize hazards, pause when unsure, protect people around you, and communicate problems before they become accidents.
