POE 1.4 • GEARS & DRIVE RATIOS

Gear Ratio & Gear Train Lab

Change tooth counts, input speed, torque, and train layout. Watch the gears move, then use the live calculations to explain how the system changes speed, torque, and direction.

Live calculation

GR = driven ÷ driver = 36 ÷ 12 = 3.00
ωout = 600 × (12 ÷ 36) = 200 rpm
Tout = 0.50 × (36 ÷ 12) = 1.50 N·m

Engineering interpretation

Speed decreases to one-third of the input while ideal torque increases by a factor of 3. One external mesh reverses direction.

Record at least four trials for your worksheet.

Challenge 1 — 3:1 Reduction

Create a two-gear system with a gear ratio of exactly 3.00.

Challenge 2 — Speed-Up

Create a gear pair where output speed is exactly twice input speed.

Challenge 3 — Idler Direction

Build a 3-gear train so the final output rotates in the same direction as the driver.

Suggested student workflow: predict first → change the system → observe the animation → read the calculations → explain the speed/torque tradeoff → record evidence in the investigation log.
